About Us
Room Remedies opened for business in 2001, and is the third generation of a business that has gone from Mother (in the 1960's) to Son to Daughter. Located originally in Wimbledon it started as a bric-a-brac shop, grew into an antique shop and is now a home furnishing store with a mix of new and old that draws on the knowledge of the past to create a look that fits into a more modern home interior.
We love furniture from the Victorian and Edwardian period. We love it for its style, its fabrication quality and for the pieces we choose, its practicality. It doesn't have to be "brown" - we restore and re-polish so you can see the wood grain, and see that it's been used and loved by generations of people.
Sometimes we paint items - on these occasions we finish items with a soft, warm country feel - accentuating a piece's best features. We try to mend locks, find keys, and keep original handles, although many a chest of drawers has left the building with glass handles, which give it a more modern vintage feel. Who knew that all this time we have been "up-cycling"?
We are constantly on the look out for unusual, interesting or stunning pieces that we can work our magic on. We are also pleased that the trend for up- cycling has meant that we now have an audience for our country style peg hooks and shelves, and mirrors made from reclaimed timber and other interesting relics of the past. We also stock antique pieces from India, with the shutter mirrors clearly striking a chord with people who want an interesting decorative item in their home.
Other than the antique/up-cycled pieces we stock a couple of newly made ranges. There's the basket range - perfect for all those storage dilemmas and the solid wood ‘Provence' range, where the Buffet and Console have proved popular items in our Edwardian terraced houses due to their petite dimensions.
After the furniture we search for mirrors and lighting that compliment the look. Finally we have a plethora of decorative accessories, which pull together the look and provide the finishing touches. There are clocks, baskets, picture frames, candle holders, jewellery boxes and stands, door wedges/stops and doormats, hooks and door knobs. There's also a range of table accessories such as coasters, placemats, napkins, napkin rings and holders. And, it doesn't stop there, some of our best selling items are not even mentioned here, such as anything with a heart, signs with heartfelt or amusing messages, vintage brooches and hand-made semi-precious jewellery designed and hand made by the owner herself.
Bearing all this in mind, really, you have to see to experience, and not everything will be featured on the website. Having said that we are always happy to try and help, so please phone or email with your enquires.
